En este artículo se utiliza la tipología de Dudley Shapere de los problemas científicos para clasificar y analizar las principales preguntas de la física en la transición del siglo xix al xx. Se exploran las concepciones de espacio, campo, entropía, éter, energía y materia en las décadas previas a la llegada de la relatividad y la mecánica cuántica. Así, se recorren las ideas de Poincaré, Faraday, Boltzmann, Maxwell, Helmholtz y Lorentz, entre otros, para comprender las condiciones epistemológicas del cambio de (...) siglo y evaluar, a la vez, las virtudes y defectos de la tipología shapereana. La presencia de interpretaciones realistas por un lado, e interpretaciones llamadas «ortodoxas» con tendencia positivista y antirrealista, por el otro, es una especie de esquizofrenia que ha acompañado a la teoría cuántica desde sus orígenes. En este trabajo veremos que esto sigue vigente analizando dos interpretaciones actuales de la mecánica cuántica cuyos compromisos ontológicos son radicalmente distintos. Primero expondré algunos argumentos a favor de una ontología de propiedades, compatible con el formalismo cuántico, y posteriormente ofreceré una respuesta que podría elaborarse (...) desde la Electrodinámica Estocástica Lineal, una teoría física que intenta rescatar el realismo y la causalidad en la mecánica cuántica. Desde mi punto de vista, si bien ambas propuestas tienen virtudes, comparten una dificultad pues son incompatibles con los sistemas cuánticos que tienen elementos no diagonales en su matriz de densidad. This paper aims to provide an answer to James Woodward’s article “Flagpoles anyone? Causal and explanatory asymmetries”. It will be conjectured that, when causal directionality depends on the experimental design, it is because the variables involved are capable of producing changes in each other. This will be exemplified using the case of ideal gases as opposed to the flagpole-shadow scenario.

In this anthology of works, the reader is offered an interdisciplinary dialogue under the rubric of a philosophy of medicine. The preparation of this work has been possible thanks to the versatile contributions that the Seminar on Epistemology of Health Sciences (SECS) welcomed in its transversal program: where it was about articulating what we have been calling a philosophy of medicine in concrete and a philosophy of health sciences in general. With the purpose of placing the philosophy of medicine within (...) the set of fields that can be assigned to the health sciences, this anthology is divided into four blocks in which it appears: the thematic horizon of the philosophy of medicine, an analysis exhaustive on the methodological approach in the health sciences, the state of the art on the debates surrounding the definition of the disease and the detailed study of the assumptions of the biomedical model. In this first block: _Filosofía de la medicina: estado del arte_, the task of answering a series of questions that allows delimiting the map of this field of research with respect to others. What makes the philosophy of medicine an autonomous field of research? What is the set of problems that the philosophy of medicine addresses? What subfields currently make up this discipline? The second block that makes up this anthology begins with the study of the epistemology and methodology of health sciences. Atocha Aliseda, Rodrigo Itzamna Fuentes and Fernanda Samaniego will carry out in their works a tentative, but methodologically suggestive task, of highlighting specific cognitive activities for solving problems in clinical terrain. _Sobre la caracterización de enfermedad: disfunción biológica y sobrediagnóstico_ is the title of our third block; where Mariana Salcedo and Adriana Murguía analyze the different debates that have arisen about the concept - so elusive - of illness. The fourth and final block is divided between the works of Marcia Villanueva, David Fajardo-Chica and David Servín Hernández, in which it will meditate on dehumanization in the practice of medicine, suffering at the end of life and the practice clinic in the current biomedical model. Prior studies note that gender- and race-based discrimination routinely inhibit women’s advancement in medical fields. Yet few studies have examined how gendered displays of deference and demeanor are interpreted by college-educated and professional Latinas/os who are making inroads into prestigious and masculinized nontraditional fields such as medicine. In this article, we elucidate how gender shapes perceptions of authority and competence among the same pan-ethnic group, and we use deference and demeanor as an analytical tool to examine these processes. Our analysis (...) underscores three main points of difference: gendered cultural taxation; microaggressions from women nurses and staff and; the questioning of authority and competence to elucidate how gendered racism manifests for Latina/o doctors. Taking demonstrations of gendered deference and demeanors are vital to transforming medical schools and creating more inclusive spaces for all physicians and patients. Conclusions are based on experiences reported in interviews with 48 Latina/o physicians and observation in their places of work in Southern California. (shrink)

Este artículo recorre brevemente el camino jurídico-institucional que condujo su reconocimiento del medio ambiente limpio, saludable y sostenible por Naciones Unidas. Primero aborda los aspectos generales sobre la protección del medio ambiente en el derecho internacional como la antesala de la subjetivación del derecho ambiental y del reverdecimiento de los derechos humanos. Luego, se centra en la protección indirecta del medio ambiente en el Sistema Europeo e Interamericano de Protección de los Derechos Humanos. En el contexto europeo, además, se alude (...) al papel del Consejo de Europa en el reconocimiento del derecho humano a un medio ambiente limpio, saludable y sostenible. Research has stressed the importance of universities in developing entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) and their possible social and economic impacts on society. Concerning this commitment, social entrepreneurs (SEs) favor university actions that facilitate the improvement of their individual capital. However, research on this topic has received little attention. This study investigated how universities contribute to the advancement of EEs. It also examines the mechanisms that universities employ to support SEs. Two survey instruments were administered: one to 418 SEs, and the other (...) to 494 people affiliated with universities. The results indicate that universities can be key actors in EEs because they can mobilize resources aligned with their institutional commitments, including training, facilities, and contact with several stakeholders. Additionally, SEs rely on training opportunities and connections with other stakeholders to implement entrepreneurial initiatives. Accordingly, our study highlights the critical role universities play in the development and survival of SEs. (shrink)

ABSTRACT This article reconstructs Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge’s critical theory by articulating some of the key concepts of History and Obstinacy, their second collaboration. The objective is to detail the grounds of their critical theory and to show how it acquires its normative character. To this aim, in a first step, I reconstruct the basis of the anthropology developed by Negt and Kluge. This anthropology allows them to argue that subjects-insofar as they are creative beings-possess ‘obstinacy’, which they understand (...) as an intrinsic and material power to resist oppression. Following this, I discuss the concept of ‘primitive accumulation’, which is used by Negt and Kluge to expose the relation between capitalism and obstinacy. Finally, I clarify the way Negt and Kluge appeal to the concept of ‘human nature’ in order to show how their theory derives its normative character. To do so, I rely on Christoph Menke’s work on ‘inner nature’. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo de investigación se realizó un estudio de la institución jurídica de denominada Suspensión Condicional del Procedimiento, sus antecedentes, beneficios y condiciones para su aplicación en delitos considerados de bagatela cuya pena no exceda los cinco años de prisión. De igual manera, se estableció que, al estar prevista en el Código Orgánico Integral Penal, vulnera los principios de: celeridad, economía procesal y mínima intervención penal, dentro de un proceso penal, en razón de que dicha institución jurídica ya (...) se encontraba prevista en nuestra legislación en el derogado Código de Procedimiento Penal. Esta investigación se realizó apoyándonos y sustentándonos a través de la doctrina, legislación comparada y la Constitución de la República. Para ello se realizó una investigación de tipo no experimental, haciendo uso de los métodos de investigación inductivo-deductivo, analítico-sintético y el exegético-jurídico. A partir de lo cual, se obtuvo como resultado que la no aplicación de la institución jurídica de la suspensión condicional del procedimiento vulnera los principios los principios de: celeridad, economía procesal y mínima intervención penal, por lo cual, se debería volver a incluir por parte del legislativo, a través de una reforma esta institución jurídica en el Código Orgánico Integral Penal como un mecanismo alternativo de solución de conflictos. Se concluye además que dicha institución jurídica trae consigo beneficios, tanto para la víctima, el procesado y el órgano jurisdiccional. (shrink)

El presente artículo aborda un tema relevante dentro del sistema judicial ecuatoriano, esto es la distinción entre el concurso de infracciones y la conexidad conforme lo establecido en el Código Orgánico Integral Penal. Dichas figuras jurídicas tienen finalidades distintas, a saber, el concurso de infracciones determina las reglas para la aplicación de penas, mientras que la conexidad establece las reglas de competencia, debiendo considerar que la finalidad de la conexidad es otorgar operatividad al concurso delictual en sus distintas modalidades. No (...) obstante, en el análisis realizado se logró identificar deficiencias normativas, lo cual incluso fue comparado con el derecho español, siendo este último referente en los temas estudiados, toda vez que la norma penal española ha desarrollado de mejor manera estas instituciones jurídicas. En este contexto, luego del análisis que se realizó dentro del presente artículo, se pone a consideración las deficiencias normativas identificadas y la necesidad imperiosa de establecer reformas legislativas, toda vez que es necesario que el Derecho Procesal ecuatoriano desarrolle instituciones jurídicas que permitan mejorar el sistema judicial, ya que al establecer reglas procesales precisas, permitirá que exista una aplicación justa y equitativa del Derecho Penal, lo cual permitirá garantizar a la sociedad en general el derecho a la seguridad jurídica y fortalecer el Estado de Derecho y justicia. En este artículo se aborda la novela y el film de Georges Perec que llevan por título Un homme qui dort. Se establecen las conexiones filosóficas y literarias que la narración traza, la relación con el concepto de vida cotidiana tal como lo manejaron los Situacionistas o Henri Lefebvre, la búsqueda de la novela sin tema característica de la Modernidad y el concepto del formalismo ruso de extrañamiento como procedimiento de trascender y superar la experiencia instrumentalizada de la realidad.

This article revisits the concept of the dividual, taking as a starting point Deleuze’s diagnosis about the relevance that dividual practices have gained with the advent of biotechnology and digital culture. Although we agree with this diagnosis, we highlight the intersections between the dividual and the individual both in Modernity and in the present time. The contemporary dividual is in tension with the modern individual, but not as a substitution, division or duplication of the individual. Rather, we state a complex (...) dividual-individual composition, focusing on biotechnologies, digital culture and financial capitalism. Following a Foucauldian approach, we understand this composition as a result of technologies of power and the result of certain modes of subjectivation. In dialogue with Simondon’s theory of individuation, we suggest that the dividual takes part in a new mode of subjectivation which can be named a ‘dividuation’ in the context of technologically mediated experiences. Corporate social responsibility refers to the duty of management to consider and respond to issues beyond the organization’s economic and legal requirements in line with social and environmental values. However, ‘management’ is constituted by real people responsible for routine decisions and formulation and implementation of policies. It can be said therefore that the ethical ideals and beliefs of these individuals – in particular their personal values – play an important role in their decisions. It is contended in this article that (...) the personal values of managers may contribute to the creation and maintenance of ‘CSR cultures’ in their organizations; that is, organizational cultures focused on ensuring environmental and social sustainability. Based on an exploratory study carried out in Brazil in 2008, this article explores the perceptions of five CSR managers in relation to the influence of their personal values on their work. The first part discusses the notion of CSR within the context of Brazilian society, the second provides a brief literature review on the link between values and organizational cultures and the third explores the perceptions of the participating managers, identifying the main thematic patterns that emerged in the study. This posture seeks to establish a critique of the dominant anthropological thinking in the French scenario of the nineteen sixties. For this task, we describe the conceptual apparatus forged in the Archeology of Knowledge to follow a double movement of strong Nietzschean presence: at the same time that Foucault makes his critique of the humanisms that permeate the current (...) philosophical thinking, he rehearses another way of thinking, freed from anthropological bonds and from any founding instance. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is altering dynamics in academia, and people juggling remote work and domestic demands – including childcare – have felt impacts on their productivity. Female authors have faced a decrease in paper submission rates since the beginning of the pandemic period. The reasons for this decline in women’s productivity need to be further investigated. Here, we analyzed the influence of gender, parenthood and race on academic productivity during the pandemic period based on a survey answered by (...) 3,345 Brazilian academics from various knowledge areas and research institutions. Productivity was assessed by the ability to submit papers as planned and to meet deadlines during the initial period of social isolation in Brazil. The findings revealed that male academics – especially those without children – are the least affected group, whereas Black women and mothers are the most impacted groups. These impacts are likely a consequence of the well-known unequal division of domestic labor between men and women, which has been exacerbated during the pandemic. Additionally, our results highlight that racism strongly persists in academia, especially against Black women. The pandemic will have long-term effects on the career progression of the most affected groups. The results presented here are crucial for the development of actions and policies that aim to avoid further deepening the gender gap in academia. (shrink)

This article presents reflections on our experience with quilombola women, through the lens of the coloniality of power-knowledge. The text aims to challenge the contradictions we face as researchers and as women. We describe the workshop we presented over four days with the participation of the quilombola women, as well as the quilombo community where the activities were held. We discuss the performance of coloniality during the time we spent together and how it was present in the organization of knowledge (...) and in our bodies, the repercussions of coloniality on ourselves, and the possibility of decolonizing knowledge and subjects, in spite of the colonial pattern of power. The activities we carried out with these women left marks on us and served as a stimulus for us to decolonize ourselves, our judgments of the object-other, as well as our writing and research practices. Para Jean-Luc Marion, el pensamiento tomasiano no se deja encerrar en los parámetros de la metafísica onto-teo-lógica, tal como es definida por Martin Heidegger. Esto implica, respecto de Dios, que, si ya no ha de ser llamado “_ente supremo_”, pues para Tomás Dios se revela como el “_Ser mismo_”, carente de esencia, éste se caracteriza por su absoluta incognoscibilidad. Para sustentar esta interpretación, Marion recurre a una serie de tesis que entiende se desprenden de la consideración de algunos textos del (...) Aquinate. En el presente trabajo se analizan algunas de estas tesis en función de dichos textos, y se propone una lectura alternativa a la del autor. Se intenta mostrar particularmente que, a los ojos de Tomás, sí es posible atribuir la noción de “esencia” a Dios, y también, alcanzar un conocimiento verdadero, aunque imperfecto y limitado de la realidad divina, a partir de la predicación positiva de ciertas perfecciones absolutas que se encuentran en las creaturas. This paper presents the Obstetric and Neonatal Ontology (OntONeo). This ontology has been created to provide a consensus representation of salient electronic health record (EHR) data and to serve interoperability of the associated data and information systems. More generally, it will serve interoperability of clinical and translational data, for example deriving from genomics disciplines and from clinical trials. Interoperability of EHR data is important to ensuring continuity of care during the prenatal and postnatal periods for both mother and child. As (...) a strategy to advance such interoperability we use an approach based on ontological realism and on the ontology development principles of the Open Biomedical Ontologies Foundry, including reuse of reference ontologies wherever possible. We describe the structure and coverage domain of OntONeo and the process of creating and maintaining the ontology. (shrink)

This paper aims to show how Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics, namely in the specificity of the Conflict of interpretations category, is a fruitful resource in the constitution of Women's Studies as well as to legitimize the need for its full integration in the canons of humanistic knowledge. In general, they continue to ignore the immense body of knowledge and perspectives that Women's Studies have produced in recent decades. In this sense, it begins by presenting the general features of the hermeneutic problematic (...) and the theme of Conflict of Interpretations, and then showing its proven contribution to the development of Women's Studies and defending its possible contribution to enhancing their integration into canons. Disfluencies include editing terms such as uh and um as well as repeats and revisions. Little is known about how disfluencies are processed, and there has been next to no research focused on the way that disfluencies affect structure-building operations during comprehension. We review major findings from both computational linguistics and psycholinguistics, and then we summarize the results of our own work which centers on how the parser behaves when it encounters a disfluency. We describe some new research showing that (...) information associated with misarticulated verbs lingers, and which adds to the large body of data on the critical influence of verb argument structures on sentence comprehension. The paper also presents a model of disfluency processing. The parser uses a Tree Adjoining Grammar to build phrase structure. In this approach, filled and unfilled pauses affect the timing of Substitution operations. Repairs and corrections are handled by a mechanism we term “Overlay,” which allows the parser to overwrite an undesired tree with the appropriate, correct tree. This model of disfluency processing highlights the need for the parser to sometimes coordinate the mechanisms that perform garden-path reanalysis with those that do disfluency repair. The research program as a whole demonstrates that it is possible to study disfluencies systematically and to learn how the parser handles filler material and mistakes. It also showcases the power of Tree Adjoining Grammars, a formalism developed by Aravind Joshi which has yielded results in many different areas of linguistics and cognitive science. (shrink)

Electronic health records (EHRs) serve as repositories of documented data collected in a health care encounter. An EHR records information about who receives, who provides the health care and about the place where the encounter happens. We also observe additional elements relating to social relations in which the healthcare consumer is involved. To provide a consensus representation of common data and to enhance interoperability between different EHR repositories we have created a solution grounded in formal ontology. Here, we present how (...) an ontology for the obstetric and neonatal domain deals with these general elements documented in health care encounters. Our goal is to promote the interoperability of information among EHRs created in different specialties. To develop our ontology, we used two main approaches: one based on ontological realism, the other based on the principles of the OBO Foundry, including reuse of reference ontologies. (shrink)

This article discusses the potential sources and consequences of unfairness in artificial intelligence (AI) predictive tools used for anti-corruption efforts. Using the examples of three AI-based anti-corruption tools from Brazil—risk estimation of corrupt behaviour in public procurement, among public officials, and of female straw candidates in electoral contests—it illustrates how unfairness can emerge at the infrastructural, individual, and institutional levels. The article draws on interviews with law enforcement officials directly involved in the development of anti-corruption tools, as well as academic (...) and grey literature, including official reports and dissertations on the tools used as examples. Potential sources of unfairness include problematic data, statistical learning issues, the personal values and beliefs of developers and users, and the governance and practices within the organisations in which these tools are created and deployed. The findings suggest that the tools analysed were trained using inputs from past anti-corruption procedures and practices and based on common sense assumptions about corruption, which are not necessarily free from unfair disproportionality and discrimination. In designing the ACTs, the developers did not reflect on the risks of unfairness, nor did they prioritise the use of specific technological solutions to identify and mitigate this type of problem. Although the tools analysed do not make automated decisions and only support human action, their algorithms are not open to external scrutiny. (shrink)

Este artigo visa analisar modos de axiologizar o bem-estar na escola em enunciados produzidos por alunos do 9º ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola municipal do interior baiano. Interessa-nos, especialmente, compreender como os sujeitos semiotizam, em seus enunciados, o que consideram o evento mais marcante de suas experiências ao longo dos anos finais do ensino fundamental e o que isso nos informa sobre os valores ali mobilizados relativos ao papel social e institucional da escola e(m) suas modalidades de convivência (...) intersubjetiva. As análises destacam que as memórias verbo-visualmente materializadas não se limitam a registros, abrigados na consciência, mas são repositórios de experiências afetivas de e em diversos cronotopos. O fato de as memórias apresentadas recobrirem diferentes eventos interacionais oferecem-nos uma visão crítica dos estudantes de como percebem e matizam complexidades das interações por eles rememoradas e enunciadas. Trabalhos, como o nosso, que se interessam pelos afetamentos de alunos, contribuem, localmente, para que o contexto escolar seja (re)(des)coberto, tensionando como percepções sociais são semiotizadas em horizontes apreciativos de experiências. Este artigo visa analisar indícios verbo-visuais de episódios de mal-estar enunciados por alunos que integram turmas da modalidade Educação de Jovens Adultos (EJA) em uma escola do interior baiano. Dedicamo-nos, especialmente, a compreender como os sujeitos semiotizam situações de embaraço social vivenciadas em salas de aula e(m) seus (d)efeitos. Como referencial teórico, partimos de pressupostos da Análise Dialógica do Discurso, da Clínica da Atividade e de outras categorias discursivas para lermos, a partir de uma dimensão axiológica, o corpus que é (...) composto por duas biograficzines. A análise dos dados registra que os (res)sentimentos dos discentes, que se deixam materializar em termos verbo-visuais, deflagram situações que ilustram a complexidade de dinâmicas que perfazem interações didáticas no ambiente escolar. Trabalhos como o nosso contribuem para tensionar a realidade escolar-profissional possibilitando a exploração de outros ângulos de nossas atividades como sujeitos sociais. (shrink)

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o papel do povo no pensamento político de Políbio, tal como apresentado no livro VI de suas Histórias. Procuramos fundamentar a hipótese de que, segundo o autor grego, só pode haver política enquanto houver povo e este não estiver corrompido. Tal interpretação se desdobra em quatro momentos fundamentais da argumentação de Políbio: o da constituição do povo junto ao aparecimento da moralidade e da lei; a participação do povo para o funcionamento dos regimes políticos, (...) com destaque para a relação entre consentimento popular e legitimidade do exercício do poder; a operação da reciprocidade e as circunstâncias de ruptura; e o fim da política, que em Políbio é acompanhada pelo fim da própria civilização, que decorre da corrupção popular. This paper intends above all to highlight three fundamental interconnected questions: (1) without reifying it in a theoretical-systematic philosophy, to highlight Derrida’s Deconstruction as a “philosophical idiom” – that of différance or of the ab-solute otherness – endowed, therefore, with specific “theoretical” assumptions (khôra, messianic and trace); (2) to highlight and to clarify the meaning of the “Derridian exception” concerning the issue of the animal and animality within the context of the sacrificial philosophical-cultural Westernness; (3) to highlight the relevance of (...) the issue of the animal and animality in order to re-think, in new terms, the question of the human itself – still essentially structured in the light of a metaphysical subjectivity –, underlining the invaluable contribution of Deconstruction to rethink the exceptionality of the human among the living beings and to bring the war for compassion to a successful end, thus contributing to the emergence of new Lights for the promise of the “coming” [“à-venir”] of another humanity and, consequently, of another civilization. Describing our visual environments is challenging because although an enormous amount of information is simultaneously available to the visual system, the language channel must impose a linear order on that information. Moreover, the production system is at least moderately incremental, meaning that it interleaves planning and speaking processes. Here, we address how the operations of these two cognitive systems are coordinated given their different characteristics. We propose the concept of a perceptual clause, defined as an interface representation that allows the (...) visual and linguistic systems to exchange information. The perceptual clause serves as the input to the language formulator, which translates the representation into a linguistic sequence. Perceptual clauses capture speakers’ ability to describe visual scenes coherently while at the same time taking advantage of the incremental abilities of the language production system. (shrink)

Objective: To explore the strategies that can help individuals mourning a family member’s death from Covid-19 to cope with the loss. Method: We carried out a narrative review on the PubCovid-19 platform using the descriptors “death,” “mourning,” “Covid-19,” and “coping strategies.” Ten articles were included. Results: The strategies found are phone calls, audio recording, letters, and photos, classified as immediate and long-term. These strategies are focused on mental health, which can be adversely affected by depression and psychological disorders. Conclusions: Creating (...) counseling programs for the relatives of those who died from Covid-19 is urgent. They must offer comprehensive, humanized, and continuous mental health care. (shrink)

Este artigo tem como objetivo central analisar a necessidade de repensar o Direito e, em particular, o Constitucionalismo, devido às constantes transformações sociais e à crescente complexidade das relações interconectadas na sociedade global. Inicialmente, aborda-se o Direito Constitucional como uma teoria do conhecimento, explorando as três matrizes epistemológicas que permitem analisar o Constitucionalismo em diferentes contextos históricos. O problema central envolve a busca por uma teoria adequada para analisar e propor soluções para questões jurídicas globais, destacando a abordagem pragmática-sistêmica baseada (...) na Teoria dos Sistemas Sociais Autopoiéticos de Niklas Luhmann. Com ênfase nessa matriz epistemológica, o artigo explora a Teoria dos Sistemas Sociais de Luhmann, bem como diferentes abordagens para a Autopoiese e a terceira fase do constitucionalismo, o Constitucionalismo Social, com foco nos Fragmentos Constitucionais, teoria desenvolvida por Gunther Teubner. A justificativa para essa análise baseia-se na adequação da Teoria dos Sistemas Sociais em um contexto pós-moderno, onde problemas e respostas jurídicas transcendem fronteiras nacionais. O artigo adota uma metodologia sistêmico-construtivista com base nos pressupostos da sociologia de Luhmann e utiliza abordagens monográficas e técnicas bibliográficas para explorar abordagens contemporâneas em Direito Constitucional. Conclui-se que, diante dos desafios jurídicos globais, o Constitucionalismo tradicional limitado aos Estados Nacionais é insuficiente, e a Teoria dos Sistemas Sociais Autopoiéticos de Niklas Luhmann oferece uma abordagem adequada para lidar com a crescente complexidade. In this brief note I discuss the central philosophical, hermeneutical, and historical concerns of the book while highlighting its principal contributions to the wider scholarship on Hegel, in the history of political thought, and to recent debates about revolutions in nineteenth-century Europe.

As social animals, humans need to live in groups. This contact with conspecifics is essential for their evolution and survival. Among the recommendations to reduce transmission of the new coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 are social distancing and home confinement. These measures may negatively affect the social life and, consequently, the emotional state and eating behavior of individuals. We assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the anxiety, premenstrual symptoms, and eating behavior of young women. Data collection was conducted in (...) person and online. A total of 71 participants, average age of 21.26 years, took part in the study. Trait anxiety during the pandemic was significantly lower than in the prepandemic period. Investigation of the “anxiety/stress” symptom of the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool revealed that this symptom was more severe before the pandemic. There was a decline in the desire for sweet and fatty foods during the pandemic. However, craving for traditional foods rose significantly in the same period. Uncontrolled and emotional eating were significantly lower during the pandemic. The results suggest that the pandemic may have had a positive impact on anxiety and eating behavior of the participants, which may be due to differences between urban and rural populations and the latter living with their families. These findings are important for raising a discussion regarding the effects of the current environment on the regulation of cognitive and dietary adaptations. (shrink)

This paper is about the concept of semantically closed languages. Roughly speaking, those are languages which can name their own sentences and apply to them semantic predicates, such as the truth or satisfaction predicates. Hence, they are “self-referential languages,” in the sense that they are capable of producing sentences about themselves or other sentences in the same language. In section one, we introduce the concept informally; in section two, we provide the formal definition of first-order semantically closed languages, which is (...) the Tarskian definition with some technical modifications. Then, we construct a semantic for this kind of language, and prove that the language is indeed semantically closed (according to Definition 1). Finally, we discuss whether the logic underlying the construction is classical, and future goals of this research. (shrink)
